After a day of which it entered to govern Law 13 of the 24 of January of 2008, that adopts measurements to control of the tobacco and its harmful effects on a person’s health, the Ministry of Health (MINSA), through its free lines: 512-9444 and 800-5500, received near 50 calls between the 6:00 a.m. and the 1:00 p.m., of yesterday Friday.

The majority of them, according to Mayanín Rodriguez, director of Promotion of Health of MINSA, came from citizens interested in knowing in what sites you could smoke and in which not. Others, said, were people who wanted to denounce those who saw smoking in public sites.

One of the biggest concerns for foreigners relocating to Panama is health care. Every day I get at least a couple of emails with questions about health insurance from people living in Panama or planning on moving to Panama. These are the answers to some of the questions people put to me.

Being a retiree does not give you discounts on insurance premiums. It does however give you discounts on medical consultations (15%) which cost between $30-55 and on medicines (10-17% depending on the pharmacy).

Foreigners have to pay in public hospitals since they can’t apply for social security unless they have worked in Panama for a significant period since quotas have to be fulfilled in order to be eligible.

To be admitted to a hospital in Panama you need to present proof of insurance or a credit card. If you don’t, hospitals are not required by law to give you medical care and they will send you to one of the public hospitals (which have difficulty in handling the amount of patients they receive) even if it is an emergency and your life is in danger. This makes health insurance a necessity.

Every company has a maximum age of admittance to a policy plan –usually around 62-64 years. After this you can still get insured but you have fewer options. The maximum age a company offers for admittance is 74.

Most companies require examinations for admittance which depend on your age.

To give you a quote a broker needs to know the age of the person to be insured and the age of any dependants, whether you are looking for local or local/international coverage and if you have any existing health problems.

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime
3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.
6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow , gastro-intestinal tract etc , and can cause organ damage , like liver , kidneys , heart , lungs etc.
7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.
8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.
9 When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.
10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.
11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.
13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.
14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6 , Flor-ssence , Essiac , anti-oxidants , vitamins , minerals , EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.
15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.
16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily and deep breathing can help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. As diabetes educators, we call our teaching about diabetes self-management training. Our goal is ultimately to have you manage your diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends covering these content areas during your education:

Diabetes disease process

Nutrition

Exercise

Monitoring your glucose levels

Medications

Prevention, detection, and treatment of acute complications

Prevention, detection, and treatment of chronic complications

Goal setting and problem solving

Psychological adjustment

Preconception care and pregnancy

If you are unsure about any of these areas, see a diabetes educator.

Once you understand these topics and have developed a game plan, support is the second step. Social support is so important to help you on your journey. It can come from family, friends, a local support group, or an online support forum. Whatever your choice, support is necessary to help you succeed in managing your diabetes.

And don’t forget to set goals and to reward yourself when you achieve them. Managing diabetes is a lifelong process, not a quick change. Lifestyle changes don’t happen overnight.

Your diabetes management plan should consist of educating yourself about all aspects of diabetes, establishing your support system, and setting goals and rewards. Know your plan and self-manage your diabetes.

I often call a client’s last visit with me a “graduation.” After the client and I have covered all the information they need to know to self-manage their diabetes and I really feel like they get it and are going to do a great job, that’s when I meet with the client one more time — for graduation. The following information is what I share with my clients during this final meeting. I talk to them about how they can prevent the complications from diabetes, going through with them a checklist of recommendations from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). There is more to managing diabetes than just controlling your glucose levels. Think of these recommendations as the ABCs.

A1C. This is a blood test that represents an average of your glucose levels over the past 2 to 3 months. The goal is to have an A1C less than 7 percent. This test should be done by your doctor at least twice per year. If you are not reaching your goal, you may need to get your A1C measured 4 times per year.

Blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for a heart attack and stroke, and for kidney and eye disease. Your blood pressure should be measured at every doctor visit, and your goal should be a reading of 130/80 mmHg or lower.

Cholesterol. Excessive fat circulating in the blood can build up in the arteries as plaque and cause a heart attack or a stroke. Make sure you have a lipid panel done annually. Targets are:

o total cholesterol: less than 200 mg/dL
o LDL (bad) cholesterol: less than 70 mg/dL
o HDL (good) cholesterol: more than 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women
o Triglycerides: less than 150 mg/dL

Dental care. Diabetes can affect the mouth and increase your risk of gum disease. While the ADA doesn’t offer specific guidelines for this, you should generally see your dentist every 6 months.

Eye exam. You should have a dilated eye exam every year.

Foot exam. At each appointment with your doctor, have your feet checked. At least once each year, you should have a thorough foot exam.

Get your microalbumin tested. This urine test, which looks for protein in the urine, is a more sensitive detector of kidney problems than a blood test. You should get the microalbumin test at least once per year, with a goal of less than 30 micrograms per milligram of creatinine.

If you don’t know when you last had these tests done, or if you are not sure of the results, ask your doctor. Remember: You are the one who manages your diabetes!
